Shaping Tomorrow: AI-led Research and Innovation under Horizon Europe, Boyan Jekov

Horizon Europe is the European Union’s flagship research & innovation programme (2021- 2027), with a budget of about €93.5 billion, aimed at tackling climate change, advancing scientific excellence, and strengthening Europe’s competitiveness. The presentation will explore how Horizon Europe supports AI-led research and innovation across multiple domains, such as health, climate, smart cities, education, and data governance, through cross-disciplinary partnerships involving technical experts, policymakers, and civil society. Key mechanisms include European Partnerships, the Missions framework, and the European Innovation Council (EIC), which facilitate funding for high-risk/high-impact projects, enable ethical and inclusive research, and foster technology scale-up. It will also address infrastructure and architectural support, such as federated data spaces, edge/cloud computing continuum, and interoperable platforms, that enable scalable, privacy-preserving, robust AI solutions. Attendees can expect insights on how to prepare proposals, align innovation with societal values, and make AI research both trustworthy and strategically advantageous. The session emphasizes ethical, legal, and environmental norms alongside technical excellence.
